Breakfast Moms – Ketha

Have you met Ketha?

Ketha is a humble, do-it-all kind of woman. She and her husband, Kuru, recently took over ownership of our City Hall, Brampton Sunset Grill and they couldn’t be happier to start this next chapter in their lives.

Ketha first immigrated to Canada from Sri Lanka back in 2011 after receiving a scholarship to study chemistry at McMaster University. “Chemistry is my passion,” she said with a smile.

She spent a few years working as a research chemist after graduating in 2014 and is always looking for new opportunities to learn.

When the opportunity came up to get involved with Sunset Grill, she knew it would be the right fit for her and her young family. Her husband has almost a decade of experience working as a cook with the brand, so she had some familiarity, however, it was a new concept to her.

“I didn’t know anything in the beginning with Sunset Grill,” she laughed. “I picked up the training quickly. I was so excited. I learned something totally different.”

“I like a challenge,” said Ketha.

When she’s not busy writing ground-breaking research papers or managing the restaurant, Ketha likes to spend time outdoors with her two young children, Pavinan, 7, and Bavisha, 4.

“When I go home, I cook, eat, and then like to bring the kids to the park,” she said. “Moms, they don’t have a lot of time for themselves. This life keeps me busy.”

Ketha recognizes the important role of mom at home. “Mom is very important for everyone, even for me,” she said. “If mom says something, I believe.”

Before Sunset Grill, Ketha never really celebrated Mother’s Day in the traditional sense. After seeing how families celebrated in the restaurant, she was inspired.

Sunset Grill has given her the opportunity to pursue her career while also being there for her family at the end of each day. “Mom is the backbone of the family,” she said. “Mom takes care of husband, takes care of kids, takes care of business; takes care of everything.”

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it,” Ketha said. “You have to find someone to help, don’t put it all on yourself.”

When she first settled in Canada, she travelled to Montreal and saw snow for the first time. “I was so excited,” she said with a smile. “Seeing snow for the first time, it was really amazing.”

She would love the chance to travel more with her family and visit back home once they get a little more settled at the restaurant.

In the more immediate future, Ketha is looking forward to building up a solid team and welcoming regulars to the restaurant. “I like the serving so I can talk to the customers, there’s so many different kinds of customers and they are so kind,” she said.

“I am excited to see people in the dining room again enjoying food,” said Ketha.

The next time you’re in the area be sure to stop by our City Hall, Brampton Sunset Grill and say hi to Ketha and her amazing team!
