Breakfast Moms – Sim
Have you met Sim?
Sim and her two cousins, Jay and Amy, took over ownership of the popular Stockyards, Toronto Sunset Grill about a year ago. Sim is easy going and always tries to see the silver lining after overcoming many hardships in her personal life. She’s a firm believer that life is meant to be celebrated and is always thoughtful in her approach.
“To understand each other’s perspective is important,” said Sim. She tries to listen to her staff’s needs and make them feel cared for. “What they know is at the end of the day, I got their back, and it all works out fine.”
When tasked with taking over one of our flagship locations, she was met with a series of challenges within the first few days of ownership, however, she managed to turn things around with her positive attitude and resolve to succeed.
Today, the team at Stockyards Sunset Grill is closer than ever, and that joy they bring to work each day extends to the guests they serve.
“Our focus is that every customer should feel important and valued when they walk in,” said Sim.
Sim hasn’t always been involved in the restaurant industry. In fact, she comes from a background in human resources and finance. “Everyone could see I had that customer service personality inside me,” she said with a smile.
Office life became monotonous to her after many dedicated years and so she decided to try her hand at something new. Sim originally learned about Sunset Grill through her neighbour, Hemant, who is the franchise owner at our Newmarket location. The two became fast friends and Sim immediately saw the potential. “We were nervous in our own sense, but it kept us on our toes,” she explained.
“I believe it as meant to be. I wouldn’t believe it if someone told me a couple years ago, I’d be running a restaurant,” she laughed. “It seems like I am the right fit here. At the end of the day, after one year here, my realization was if you’re happy and feel like you belong, that does it for you.”
Sim’s husband helps with coffee runs from time to time and her 16-year-old daughter, Sanya, assists with the front of house operations on the weekends. “What I’ve seen in her from when we took over last year, to now, her confidence has skyrocketed,” she said with pride.
In her downtime, Sim enjoys reading fiction novels, listening to music and travelling. She’s been out west dozens of times in the almost 20 years she’s lived in Canada and hopes to explore the east coast later this year. “There’s so much beauty in Canada itself,” she said.
Sim’s family is more of the road-tripping type and loves to explore nature. Her 9-year-old son, Samar, and their two-year-old French bulldog, Chico, are best buds and keep the family active with long walks, whenever they can find the time.
“I am very into family,” said Sim. She draws inspiration from her own mother and always tries to lead by example. “My mother is the epitome of grace; she is the one who raised us.” The importance of guiding younger generations is not lost on her.
“Follow your passion, do something you want to get into,” she said enthusiastically. “You need to have a rational mindset in life; you’ll never find 100 per cent of the situation to go the way you want it to be. Have that patience and resilience.”
The next time you’re in the area be sure to stop by our Stockyards, Toronto Sunset Grill and say hi to Sim and her amazing team!
