Breakfast Moms – Kim

Have you met Kim?

Kim is the do-it-all type mom who runs our Niagara-on-the-Lake Sunset Grill with her husband Scott. With four young children under 10, it’s easy to understand why they were initially attracted to the restaurant – the hours. “I love the concept of it,” says Kim. “It allows me to have more time with the kids at home, which is nice.”

TJ, their almost nine-month-old son, has a smile that can light up a room. He’s often in the restaurant with them, as they were fortunate enough to be able to set up a cozy office space in the finished basement. Their other three children, Liv, Eric, and Avery, even love coming to the restaurant on the weekends for breakfast.

While Scott grew up in the area, Niagara-on-the-Lake is a newer community for Kim. “There’s lots of regulars and friendly locals that we’re getting to know,” says Kim. “I feel like we’re becoming a part of the community.” A task that seemed daunting at first.

Kim manages the front of house while Scott typically takes care of the books and logistics side of the restaurant. It’s been an easy transition for Kim, as she used to be a server for 10 years – it was a natural fit. Kim is an elementary school teacher, and used to teach high school for about 10 years. She’s hoping to go back to teaching high school part time once they’ve found their groove with the restaurant.

She’s also done a lot of travelling. Back when Kim was in university, she spent her summers travelling across Europe – to destinations such as Greece, Italy, and Germany. She’s even been to Africa, and would like to one day travel to Australia. “It’s always been on my bucket list,” she tells. “That one’s for retirement.”

Kim wants what all moms want on Mother’s Day: to relax, have the family get along, and be appreciated. “All you want is the kids to do something that recognizes that you’ve worked hard for them all year and that they love you,” she says with a smile. “A day with the family where everyone gets along, taking them out, and doing something.”

This will be their first year hosting a Mother’s Day breakfast at Sunset Grill – since they only opened the restaurant last summer – and Kim is looking forward to the challenge and serving all of the families that are sure to come in. “I don’t come here because I have to, I come here because I want to.” Which makes all the difference.

At the end of the day, for Kim, the most rewarding part about being both a mom and a career woman is the challenge it provides her with. “When you get through the day, at the end of the day you’re like ‘I can’t believe everything I’ve done’,” she says. “I like the challenge of doing it all.” And do it all she does.

The next time you stop by for breakfast or lunch at our Niagara-on-the-Lake Sunset Grill, be sure to say hi to Kim!
