Sunset Grill Restaurants Commit to Chicken Welfare
OAKVILLE, ONTARIO, Oct. 4, 2019 – Sunset Grill Restaurants is proud to announce our pledge to ethically sourcing chicken in all of our Canadian restaurants. By 2024, it is our goal to accomplish the following for 100% of our products:
- Transition to strains of birds that demonstrate higher welfare outcomes that meet the criteria of the RSPCA Broiler Breed Welfare Assessment Protocol or Global Animal Partnership (GAP).
- Reduce stocking density to a maximum of 30 kg/sq. meter and prohibit broiler cages.
- Provide birds enriched environments including litter, lighting, and enrichment that meets GAP’s new standards.
- Process chickens in a manner that avoids pre-stun handling and instead utilizes a multi-step controlled atmosphere processing system that induces an irreversible stun.
- Demonstrate compliance with the above standards via third party auditing. “We feel the adaptation of this policy is an important step towards sourcing ethically and responsibly within our supply chain,” said Angelo Christou, founder and CEO of Sunset Grill Restaurants Ltd.
In 2016, Sunset Grill Restaurants also committed to sourcing and serving 100% cage-free eggs in all of our Canadian restaurants by 2025 (conditional on supply), to improve the health and welfare of our chickens. Sunset Grill Restaurants will take this step towards sourcing ethically within our supply chain while continuing to focus on serving fresh, high quality meals to our guests.
