Sunset Grill Blue Mountain supplied a hearty breakfast for participants in the much-anticipated 16th annual Damon Allen Celebrity Golf Tournament on Sept. 25, 2020. All funds raised go toward Blue Mountain Village Foundation, whom in turn support local charitable organizations.

Golfers were greeted with sunny skies and seasonably warm temperatures as they enjoyed bacon and eggs on the restaurant’s patio. The breakfast and lunch spot had physical distancing measures in full effect – staff also wore masks and/or face shields and disinfected surfaces frequently.

“I’ve been doing the tournament 13 years and every year, I look forward to it,” said Franchise Owner Bruce Melhuish. “I see some of the same people every year and they love to come, they do it for the same reason I do it. It’s an enjoyable thing to do.”

There were 59 participants in this year’s tournament with a special appearance by Canadian PGA member and trick shot artist, Todd Keirstead.

“What better way to help out your community by doing something for the [Blue Mountain] Village Foundation that touches so many of our local customers,” said Melhuish. “Everyone who is a part of this event comes back to support us for other initiatives, including Pancake Tuesday.”

The Blue Mountain Village Foundation functions like a small United Way, explained Tina Ward, membership coordinator for Blue Mountain Village Association. Ward has been involved in the charity golf tournament for the past 10 years.

“Bruce sponsors the breakfast for us every year,” she said. “The participants love the breakfast; Bruce is a staple here and the feedback is always wonderful.”

One hundred per cent of funds raised from the tournament support community programming, according to Ward. The Foundation has an application process in the spring and fall and awards grants to multiple agencies across the South Georgian Bay community. Past grant recipients include Alzheimer Society Grey-Bruce, Collingwood Hospital Foundation and Senior’s Care Meal Delivery Program, among others.

To-date, the event has raised more than $1.57 million for local community organizations.
